As a legal community, we are in largely unchartered territory as many law firms have deferred the start dates for their new associates and encouraged or required placement in public interest organizations in the interim.   As law firms, legal aid organizations and these new lawyers set up programs and positions, a variety of legal issues regarding the employment relationship can arise, including the employment status of the deferred associate.  Seyfarth Shaw, LLP has generously offered to give a primer on some of these issues for interested law firms and legal aid organizations.

Our presenters, Steve Pearlman and Kate Mendez of Seyfarth Shaw's Labor and Employment Department, will assist in navigating issues likely to arise with with this trend.  Some of the issues they will address include:

  • structuring the relationship between the attorneys, the public interest organization and the law firm;
  • understanding the legal implications of those various structures;
  • interviewing, selecting and terminating attorneys; and
  • steps public interest organizations can take to maintain their culture and to ensure quality work product and autonomy.
