CGLA sees clients with criminal, family, housing, and criminal-records (expungement, sealing, and clemency) cases. Intakes require that you come to an intake site, interview potential clients and participate in our weekly intake meeting on Thursday afternoons. We conduct three intake sessions per week: two at CGLA and one at a satellite location (St. Sabina Church, near 79th and Racine, or Breakthrough Urban Ministries, 402 N. St. Louis). Each session lasts approximately two hours and is scheduled between the hours of 10:00AM and 2:00PM, at the volunteer’s convenience. Volunteers return to CGLA on Thursday afternoon (either at 2PM or 3PM, for civil and criminal cases respectively) to present their cases at the weekly intake meeting, which also lasts one to two hours. We provide a manual that includes the types of issues you will face and questions to ask. Training: Intake Training (two one hour sessions). Observe and/or participate in at least three intake sessions. Requirements: Attorney or law student. Suggested Commitment: After completing the training program, we ask volunteers to commit to completing a minimum of three intake sessions on their own, which can be scheduled at the volunteer’s convenience.
