This session will provide a comprehensive examination of the housing protections under the federal Violence Against Women Act and newly enacted state law, the Safe Homes Act. Among the issues to be addressed are: violence in Illinois, the applicability of VAWA and the Safe Homes Act to residential tenancies, denials of admission to private and subsidized housing based on past violence, defenses to evictions from rental and subsidized housing, rights of violence survivors during the tenancy, issues related to lease termination, implementation of VAWA protections, and claims under the Fair Housing Act and the Illinois Human Rights Act.
