The Rights of the Unmarried:
Part I
A Brief Overview on Issues of
Inheritance, Powers of Attorney and Health Care

It’s estimated that more than 10% of couples in the United States are not legally married and that this is one of the fastest growing populations. It also is a population that is well represented in the legal aid caseload. Couples who are not married face the same circumstances and life experiences such as illness, death and debt that intersect with the legal world as do married couples. The panel in Part I on this topic will do the following: look briefly at how the courts and legal system view unmarried couples; help raise the awareness of the legal aid audience to legal challenges faced by unmarried couples in Illinois around some issues such as inheritance, powers of attorney and health care; and suggest some approaches that will help with these issues. (Part II will focus on issues related to children.)
