The presentation will give a short overview of the Illinois prison system, and the legal issues that commonly arise.

The course will cover issues you need to know when you take on a case, including:

  1. Who do you sue
  2. What do you allege, including issues arising under the law
  3. Common types of prisoner civil rights cases (including due process, censorship, religion, use of force, failure to protect, and inadequate medical care)
  4. Procedural hurdles (including issues which arise under the Prison Litigation Reform Act), and
  5. Fee awards (or lack thereof).
