The Intern will work with Catholic Charities Legal Assistance (CCLA). CCLA is a program with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago which provides pro bono assistance to clients in need. CCLA has two full time staff attorneys and numerous volunteer attorneys and paralegals who receive requests for assistance in a variety of areas of the law including, but not limited to, family law, housing, public benefits and employment law. CCLA primarily provides clients with basic advice and access to a network of pro bono attorneys or referrals to appropriate legal aid organizations. CCLA also hosts educational seminars on legal topics geared toward the general public at a variety of Catholic Charities’ locations. In addition, CCLA staffs a monthly legal “advice desk” at suppers for the homeless and/or economically deprived at each of two Catholic Charities’ locations, downtown Chicago and Des Plaines. CCLA has also begun taking cases for representation in-house on a trial basis in the areas of simple estate planning and uncontested guardianships.
The intern will assist CCLA attorneys with case intake via telephone and potentially during supper programs. The intern will sometimes draft case summaries for the volunteer attorneys to assist the attorneys in providing legal advice to clients. Research on various legal issues may be requested and the development of resource files for use by the staff and volunteers may be part of this position. The intern will also be involved in assisting in the development of intake forms and other processes related to implementing CCLA’s move into direct services as well as assist with drafting petitions and documents for any cases taken for in-house representation.
Completion of first year of law school. Fluency in Spanish a plus.
