Organization: Prairie State Legal Services, Inc.- Waukegan Office
Job Location: Waukegan, IL
Salary: Unpaid
Submission Deadline: Until Filled

Position Description

Prairie State Legal Services is seeking volunteer attorneys to provide legal advice in its Waukegan office to clients calling on the telephone counseling hotline.  The telephone counseling hotline receives many calls from low-income Illinois residents, and volunteers ensure that essential legal services are provided to as many of these people as possible.

Volunteer attorneys would make return calls to clients that have called on the hotline and have been prescreened for legal services.  Volunteers would provide immediate legal advice and referrals to clients.

This position gives attorneys the opportunity to help the less fortunate in a meaningful way.  By providing immediate legal advice, a volunteer attorney can help someone move out of a legal crisis or avoid a legal crisis altogether.  Volunteering with the telephone counseling hotline allows attorneys to assist clients without having the burden of adding a case to their heavy workload.

Volunteers are provided training on Prairie State Legal Services' case management system as well as Prairie State Legal Services' policies and procedures.  There is always a supervising attorney on-site to answer legal or procedural questions.
