The Illinois Coalition for Equal Justice honored Illinois Senate President Emil Jones Jr. and former Illinois Secretary of Human Services Linda Renee Baker on July 29, with its 2003 Champion of Justice awards. Jones, a member of the Illinois General Assembly since 1973, was recognized for his life-long dedication to social justice - He was a key supporter of the Illinois Equal Justice Act, which passed the state legislature in 1999. "Throughout my career, I have worked to help combat domestic violence, exploitation of elderly, child abuse and homelessness," said Jones. "Central to helping alleviate these problems is providing people with access to legal aid." Baker, who served as Illinois Department of Human Services Secretary from 2000 to 2003 was honored for her support of the Illinois Equal Justice Foundation. The Illinois Coalition for Equal Justice is a diverse 30-member body of lawyers, judges, and public officials who work to coordinate, support and encourage initiatives designed to increase access to justice in the state.
